Xybots

Introduction

Xybots is a third-person shooter arcade game developed by Atari Games and released in 1987. Players take on the roles of "Major Rock Hardy" and "Captain Ace Gunn" as they navigate through a 3D maze, battling a horde of robots known as the Xybots. The objective is to prevent the Xybots from destroying humanity. The game received praise for its cooperative multiplayer mode but faced financial challenges due to its unique control scheme.

Development and Gameplay

Designed by Ed Logg, Xybots was initially intended as a sequel to the game Gauntlet. Players control characters in a split-screen display, using a joystick that also rotates to direct movement. The lower half of the screen displays gameplay, while the upper half shows player status and the current level map. Players engage in laser gun battles, seek cover from enemy fire, and confront boss Xybots in various levels. Energy pods and power-ups can be collected to replenish health and enhance abilities. Shops allow players to purchase energy and upgrades using coins obtained from defeated Xybots.

Reception

Upon its release, Xybots garnered positive reviews for its engaging gameplay, cooperative mode, and maze-like stages. The cooperative multiplayer aspect was particularly well-received. Although the game faced challenges due to its complex controls and gameplay, it was noted to be ahead of its time, providing a unique gaming experience that stood out from other titles of its era.

Port and Legacy

Xybots was ported to multiple personal computers and the Atari Lynx handheld. Versions for the Sega Genesis and Nintendo Entertainment System were announced but never released. Various emulated versions of the arcade game were included in compilations such as Midway Arcade Treasures 2.

With the acquisition of Atari Games' library, Midway released the arcade version of Xybots as part of several console compilations. Following Midway's dissolution, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment continued the legacy by including Xybots in the Midway Arcade Origins and Lego Dimensions Midway Arcade Level Pack releases.

In retrospect, Xybots is recognized for its innovative gameplay and contributions to the arcade gaming industry. Despite its challenges, it left a mark on the gaming landscape of its time.
