Plot: The player embarks on an adventure at Mason Laboratory, where Dr. Mason offers a choice between three Pokémon Trading Card Game decks: Charmander & Friends, Squirtle & Friends, or Bulbasaur & Friends. Mark, the player character, aspires to become the world's greatest Pokémon Trading Card Game player, rivaling Ronald, who shares a similar goal. Dueling Ronald tests the player's cards, with defeat signaling room for deck improvement and victory rewarding a Promotional Card. The game's objective is to defeat eight Club Masters, earn their Master Medals, and then challenge four Grand Masters and the Champion.

Features:

  • Overworld: Manage decks through the "Deck" option, save custom deck configurations at the Deck Save Machine, and view owned cards via the PC. Engage in duels at the Battle Center and trade cards at the Gift Center. Participate in the Challenge Cup tournament and receive rare Promotional Cards.
  • Duels: Engage in duels with various commands available, win booster packs, and receive a Promotional Card upon defeating Ronald. Save data allows resuming duels from the point of interruption.
  • Clubs: Challenge eight Pokémon Clubs, each affiliated with a specific type. Face three Club Members in each Club, with Club Masters awaiting at the end.
  • Grand Masters: Confront four Grand Masters at the Pokémon Dome, each representing a different type. The Champion, Ronald, boasts a deck of mixed types.
  • Pokémon Cards: Collect 228 cards, including those from the Base Set, Jungle, and Fossil expansions, along with game-exclusive cards. Obtain cards through booster packs, defeating opponents, and earning Legendary cards from Grand Masters.

Connectivity:

  • Card Pop!: Exchange cards and perform a random card generation feature between two cartridges via infrared. Players can duel each other using their own decks via the Game Boy Game Link Cable. Multiplayer features are disabled in the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console release.

Release Changes:

  • Virtual Console Differences: The Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console release lacks Game Link functionality, disabling features like Card Pop! and multiplayer functions. The Game Boy Printer "Print" function is also disabled.
  • Nintendo Switch Online Differences: The Nintendo Switch Online version emulates link cable functionalities and infrared communication. The only disabled feature is the PC's "Print" option.
