Outlaws: A Commodore 64 Video Game
"Outlaws" is a video game developed by Ultimate Play the Game and released in 1985 for the Commodore 64. Unlike previous arcade adventure titles such as "The Staff of Karnath" and "Entombed," "Outlaws" takes a different approach by being a straightforward shooter game, diverging from the usual theme of the aristocrat adventurer Sir Arthur Pendragon.
The release of "Outlaws" coincided with another Wild West-themed game, "Gunfright," for the ZX Spectrum. This game was created by brothers Dave and Robert (Bob) Thomas.
Introduction
In "Outlaws," players are greeted with a mysterious and intriguing introduction:
Many years ago, a band of men rode forth from the Eastern desert, bringing with them terror and devastation. No one was safe from the relentless grasp of a merciless death. Families were torn apart, and no man was truly free. They were known as the OUTLAWS.
Driven solely by a ruthless ambition and selfish greed, they swept across the land, leaving a trail of death and plunder in their wake. Town after town fell victim to their pillaging, with no one able to stand against them, no survivor brave enough to try. The townsfolk lived in fear, praying that the shadow of doom cast by the evil OUTLAWS would spare their valley. Despite their fear, they held onto hope, praying for a savior to deliver them from the tyranny of the OUTLAWS.
The Lone Rider
Months of suffering passed, until one fateful night beneath a clear moonlit sky. A fiery storm emerged, and within its tempest rode a man—a stranger driven by vengeance. Nameless and without a past, he had been sent to avenge the innocent. He was the LONE RIDER.
Reception
"Outlaws" received mixed reviews upon its release. Zzap!64 gave the game a 35% rating, criticizing it as mediocre and stating that Ultimate had seen better days. However, the graphics were praised for their crispness and excellent equestrian animation. Commodore User also expressed disappointment, finding the game lacking in depth despite its high-quality graphics and moderately effective sound. The music was considered subpar and below standard. Overall, the game could have been improved with more engaging gameplay elements.
