Mr. Driller is a puzzle video game franchise created by Yasuhito Nagaoka and Hideo Yoshizawa. The first game was released in 1999 for arcades and various home consoles, such as the PlayStation. The gameplay involves controlling Susumu Hori, also known as Mr. Driller, or one of his companions, to destroy colorful formations of blocks and reach the bottom of a well while collecting air capsules to replenish oxygen and avoiding being crushed by falling blocks.
Initially intended as the third entry in Namco's Dig Dug series by Nagaoka, Mr. Driller and Dig Dug have become connected through shared characters and gameplay concepts. Project Driller developed the series, producing four sequels from 2000 to 2004. After Namco's merger with Bandai in 2005, Bandai Namco Entertainment acquired the Mr. Driller property and released additional installments for digital distribution and mobile devices.
The series gained popularity in Japan, with its characters becoming synonymous with the Namco brand. Western reception has varied, with critics appreciating the simplicity and addictiveness of the gameplay while some installments received criticism for lack of content and recycling assets from earlier games.
The games in the series include titles such as Mr. Driller, Mr. Driller 2, Mr. Driller G, Mr. Driller A, Mr. Driller Drill Land, Mr. Driller: Driller Puzzle, Mr. Driller Drill Spirits, Mr. Driller Aqua, Mr. Driller Online, Mr. Driller: Drill Till You Drop, Mr. Driller W, Mr. Driller VS, and Mr. Driller for Kakao.
Gameplay involves puzzle action where players control a character to destroy blocks and reach the bottom of a well, similar to a cross between Puyo Puyo and Dig Dug. Oxygen management, block destruction, and various gameplay mechanics such as power-ups and multiplayer modes are key elements.
The original Mr. Driller was created by Yasuhito Nagaoka and Hideo Yoshizawa, with subsequent sequels adding new features and characters. Despite some commercial successes, the series saw a decline in support from Namco Bandai by the early 2010s, with only a few mobile spin-offs released.
In 2020, Bandai Namco Entertainment remastered Mr. Driller Drill Land for the Nintendo Switch and PC, considering further entries if the remaster proved popular. Related games include Baraduke, Bakutotsu Kijutei, and Star Trigon, which adopt characters and concepts from the Mr. Driller series.
While the series was commercially successful in Japan, Western reception varied, with some games receiving praise for their content and quality while others were criticized for their presentation and lack of innovation.
